Salzburg Internationaler airport

first Polycristalit counter manufactured by us.

From 1985 on, we felt that the request for fiberglass counter, came in fewer and fewer. The most valid indicator was, when Hamburg and Stuttgart became new airport terminals. It started at the buildings themselves. Big and high glas pavilion like, supported by trees of heavy steel, was one design change.
When it came to Interior design I recognized, the use of swiss pear tree veneered wood, glass, stainless steel, and granite was the dominated materials used. The 100.000 fiberglass counters around the world, more than 15 years of use, plus the 60.000 copied counters in lower quality as ours, changed the design style, thought in architecture classes of universities and a new generation of architects thought the airport world needs again some changes in design.

Hamburg and Stuttgart airports decided, to use Swiss pear wood counters. In Australia some airports used Corian, a solid mixture of mineral powder with acrylic resin and cured in sheets to be worked from carpenters. I worked many years ago with mineral powders as a filler of epoxy resin. But this resin was yellowish and mixed with color pigments it changed color so that precise color could not be guaranteed. After 1985 I was in search of clear color less resin. There was some light stabilized resin on the market, but when add with accelerator and hardener, the color was not anymore water clear.

I got a tip from a chemist of the BASF the big chemical manufacturer in Germany. I had to add some special blue color tinting liquid. I did so and how wonder the resin got water clear even with accelerator and hardener. Now I needed the right mineral powder as a filler. I made many trips to Italy, to Carara. Where the most white marble is found around the world. I got marble powder in all grades and made test casts. Not anyone of the test, brought good results. All marble powder brought white color into the mixture and such a composition could not guarantee color integrity. I used powder from corundum and silizium carbide, and flew to Greece where the most white marble where digged in mines undergraund, all of this samples and I test hundreds of minerals, did not work for the quality I wanted to do.

Finally I searched in "who delivers what" and I received a lot of representatives of companies making filler components for the plastic industry, mostly to make their material inflammable. So I got many samples of aluminum hydroxide in powder form of many grades. And I could learn a lot of this specialist representatives. This filler with my tinted resin gave super results. I could read a newspaper through a 5 mm thick sample sheet. Mixed with color pigments the color stayed the same as the pure color pigment. I had found my new material for my new serie of airport counter, and the first project was Salzburg airport, where I could convince the airport managers as well as the architect to use counters of Polycristalit my trademark Name for my new material



In the tender for the counter at Salzburg airport, Corian was specified from the architect. But as mentioned before, Corian comes from the factory not as a liquid material it comes as sheets, to the carpenter, and this tradesman must cut pieces as per his drawings and clue them together like he works with plywood or chipboard. Also seems are to be seen, where the pieces are clued together and the strength is weaker as if cast in one 3 dimensional piece.

After discussions with the airport managers and their architect, I promised them, to bring them, in two days a sample from one counter corner which was a typical 3 dimensional unit. The carpenter had to make the same piece and my unit was much nicer to look at, and more stable as my competitors. So I got the order and you can see it pictured on the left side of this pages.
